The Boundaries of Solidarity under Neoliberalism

So far, I have demonstrated the ways in which betrayal serves as the lens through which young working-class people construct their coming of age narratives. That is, labor market flexibility combined with unsuccessful interactions with institutions bolsters young people’s visions of themselves as completely alone, teaching them that they can depend on no one but themselves. This heightened sensitivity to betrayal and the concomitant reverence for individualism and self-reliance also shape the ways in which they draw boundaries against others, marking their community boundaries and demarcating where their obligations to others end (Lamont 1992).13 For the post-industrial working class, I argue that the logic of neoliberalism—of atomic individualism, self-reliance, and government distrust—underlies the kinds of boundaries they draw against others, especially in the realm of race. This process of neoliberal boundary-making holds grave consequences for the social, economic, and political future of the American working class.
